This lodge is excellent value and people often remark upon the good guiding and friendly hospitality. It’s a great place for families. The lodge is located just off the N2, 34 km north of the town of Hluhluwe.
The nine stone and thatched chalet are simple and very comfortable. Each has a private verandah with fabulous views across the plain.
The lodge has a stunning rock pool, a comfy lounge, a bar, and a dining room. The breakfast is particularly good - providing lots of choice and delicious freshly cooked muffins and scones - and will set you up for the day.
Black rhino are a highlight of this reserve and the birth of two new calves has brought the number to 23! Three baby elephants are also new additions. There is a good chance that you will see some of the smaller and more unusual predators, such as caracal and spotted hyena.
The lodge offers rhino and elephant tracking and you can seek the ‘Big Five’ in the Hluhluwe National Park, just a short drive away. You can also join the rangers tracking leopard tortoises around the reserve. Leopard Mountain is located in one of the world’s best bird-watching areas, and you may wish to visit the Bald ibis nesting site in the cliffs.
In addition to all the wildlife activities, you can visit a Zulu village and learn about traditional Zulu culture. Take one of the mountain bike trails through the African bush, or test yourself on Leopard Mountain’s challenging and scenic 4X4 track. There are areas of the reserve which are free from dangerous animals where you can hike, bird or go horse-riding. The lodge is near Lake Jozini, which is South African’s only tiger-fishing site.
Leopard Mountain has qualified as a ‘Birder Friendly Establishment’ with BirdLife South Africa.
