Fishing report from Anjajavy 2007

Fishing report from Anjajavy 2007

Greg Phillips reports on fishing at Anjajavy in the first 10 weeks of 2007:

‘The 2007 fishing year got off to a fine start with a vast array of species being caught by our crew and the ever-eager guests. On one occasion we spotted no less than 27 sailfish in five hours of fishing! We managed to catch and release three of these sailfish, our low catch rate probably being due to the fact that they were completely surrounded by plenty of small baitfish and appeared to be full and lazy! It took some hard work to entice the three that were landed.

Sailfish - catch and release

In January, we caught one black marlin that was in the region of 120kg. A number of others attacked our lures but did not let us get them to the boat and are still lurking somewhere near the drop off! It’s good to know that our Marlin season is longer than we had thought. We boated quite a few good fish such as Wahoo, King Mackerel and Barracuda. We also had some very successful inshore fishing: the biggest Kingfish brought back to the hotel weighed in at over 20kg – and some bigger ones were released!

I would like to give a big thank you to all the people who released their fish - I know from experience how difficult it can be. I am pleased to say that our boats put back 80% of the game fish caught for the year of 2006.

The really exciting fishing has been the popper fishing close to the hotel. This can be measured by the quantity of poppers lost to monster Kingfish within 15 kilometres of the hotel. These big GTs keep the fishing guests coming back for more each year! We also caught some fine King Mackerel on poppers and on jigging spoons with a good specimen of 18kg caught on a popper in 8m of water.

Last week’s highlight was the Dorado. We caught six, literally one after the other, with a group of beginner fishermen who, I’m sure, have now gone home and bought themselves a fishing rod each for next time.

The fishing has been good so far this year and, since it is just the start of the Tuna season, I’m sure that the fishing is just going to get better!’
