Sierra Leone natural history holidays are off the beaten track adventures that take you deep into relatively undiscovered parts of West Africa. Wildlife viewing in the dense Upper Guinea rainforests involves determination and luck, but Sierra Leone has some of the highest concentrations of primates and birds in West Africa. Tiwai Island in the southeast beckons nature enthusiasts. This 1200-hectare island reserve has over 50km of walking trails from which to spot some of the 130 recorded bird species and eleven primate species, including the rare King colobus and Diana guenon. Even more remote, Gola Rainforest is a renowned birding hotspot, visited for the likes of White-necked picathartes (Rockfowl) and the localised Gola malimbe.
