One of the most beautiful and surprising of the Central American States, Belize is the only official English-speaking country in Latin America. With fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling, off shore islands and white sand beaches, protected areas of forest sheltering rare wildlife and extraordinary ancient Mayan sites, Belize holidays really do offer an incredibly diverse range of attractions. Belize was a British colony for more than a century, and today its small population of just over 300,000 makes it one of the least populated in all of Central America, with a mix of Maya and Garifuna cultures as well as many different Mennonite communities.
Belize Reef and Rainforest
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef so it’s not surprising that holidays to Belize have been principally renowned for the world-class diving. But with around 40% of the land protected, there is a huge amount of wildlife to see including puma, ocelot and jaguar as well as over 500 recorded bird species. The lush interior jungle is also the site of significant Mayan ruins. Caracol is close to the border with Guatemala, and is the most extensive Mayan site in Belize, covering over 30 square miles. The sites of Xunantunich and Lamanai are also worth visiting.
Belize and Guatemala
Belize holidays can easily be combined with time in Guatemala, where there are colonial towns, colourful markets and sparkling lakes to explore as well as the huge pyramid temples of Tikal. A typical 12-day Guatemala and Belize holiday will visit Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Tikal, the Cayo District of Belize and the white sand beaches of Amergris Caye
