Although not as famous as Kruger, the Waterberg and Madikwe Game Reserve have emerged as excellent choices for non-malarial game viewing. Located 3-4 hours drive, or a 50 minute flight, northwest of Johannesburg, this former scrubland has been rehabilitated and restored to a natural bush landscape. Further to the west of Johannesburg, in the Northern Cape province, near the Botswana border, the harsh semi-arid grasslands of the southern Kalahari also have a story of reclamation and restoration to boast about. The game viewing here is magical, with vast open spaces and a wildlife list that includes many rare species.
