A two-day overland journey, or pricey boat transfer from Freetown, brings you to Shebro Island and the idyllic Turtle Islands. The provincial capital, Bonthe, was formerly one of the wealthiest towns in the country; wrought-iron lampposts, stone churches and an old railway line are evocative reminders of the town’s former glory as a major trading post. Bonthe Holiday Village has good boats, equipment and guides, as well as comfortable accommodation.
The remote Turtle Islands are a string of picture-postcard tropical islands. There is no accommodation there (yet), but those who wish to visit from Bonthe will find tiny fishing villages, long white sand beaches and, with luck, nesting turtles.
