Despite being responsible for much of Belize's food and sugar production, northern Belize and the area round Orange Walk is not easily accessible. Orange Walk itself is a curious mix of Creoles, Maya and Mennonite communities. Jaguars, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi are all on the prowl in the remote jungle areas here and crocodiles bask along the New River. On a holiday to Orange Walk, you can discover some spectacular Mayan sites almost completely surrounded by thick jungle such as Altun Ha and the impressive ruins of Lamanai.
