St James of Knysna is a smart, owner-run, five-star country house hotel set in lovely three-acre gardens on the shores of Knysna Lagoon, about 2 km from the town centre. The views out to the Knysna Heads are impressive, the perfect backdrop to a game of croquet, a relaxing walk through the gardens and greenhouses, a tennis match, or a dip in one of three swimming pools. You can also fish from the private jetty or explore this natural estuary in one of the hotel’s canoes.
Other activities that can be arranged for you include water skiing in the warm waters of the lagoon, golf, hiking, mountain biking, deep-sea fishing, bird watching, horse riding, whale watching in season and the historic steam train trip from Kynsna to George.
St James was the winner of the coveted AA Accommodation Awards in the Luxury Lodge category in both 2005 and 2006.
Accommodation
There is a choice of accommodation at the St James, from luxurious suites in the manor house, cool suites around a central, Mediterranean-style courtyard and garden rooms in the cottage wing. Some overlook the lagoon while others are garden or courtyard facing, and there is a range of beds.
All the 15 rooms and suites in the manor house and the courtyard are extremely comfortable and equipped with air-conditioning, mini bars, satellite television, bath robes, etc.
Facilities at St James of Knysna
The manor house is designed around an impressive, double-height lounge area, with an open fire in the cooler months, a comfortable place to relax, read the newspaper or play board games. The Paquita bar, with its lagoon facing terrace, is open ‘til late. Light lunches, teas and snacks are served on the various patios and terraces, and the elegant dining room is known for its excellent food, fine wines and panoramic views of the lagoon.
