Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge

The Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge is located in the pristine Manu cloud forest reserve on the lush eastern slope of the Andes. At 1600m elevation in the Kosñipata Valley the lodge is around 8 hours from Cuzco along what many describe as ‘the best road in the world’ for birding. The lodge has 12 comfortable wooden bungalows, private bathrooms with hot showers and balconies overlooking the cloud forest. There is a large dining room which is separate from the accommodation and staffed by a local highland family.

Situated in the mosquito-free, temperate climate of the Kosñipata Valley, Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge protects and supports a 5,060ha./12,500-acre private cloud forest reserve. Although the lodge is peaceful and secluded it is situated close to the scenic Cuzco–Shintuya highway. The highlight of your stay is the world’s largest, most accessible and tamest known group of displaying Andean Cocks-of-the-Rock, the national bird of Peru. Each morning and evening the males stage a colourful, noisy mating display at the ‘lek’ very close to the lodge, a wonderful display. Other wildlife spotted from the lodge included spectacled Bears, Woolly Monkeys, Brown Capuchin Monkeys, quetzals and a host of other colourful birds. There is also a one hour trail to an unusual bamboo forest.
